Find Out What's Happening Around The Affric Kintail Way

The Glen Affric Duathlon

The Glen Affric Duathlon made a welcome return in 2015 having been a very popular event from 2004 - 2009. This year the 11th staging of the event takes place on Saturday 11th May and is sponsored by SPAR. The event has proved a big attraction with competitors heading to Glen Affric from all over the UK.

Set amidst stunning mountain scenery this run/bike/run event is suitable for competitors of all abilities. Not only will the experienced, even elite athlete find it challenging, but the environmant also makes it a very rewarding experience for novices. All levels are therefore encouraged to enter. The Highland Cross

The Highland Cross is a 50-mile duathlon (20 miles on foot, 30 miles on bike) traversing the spectacular Scottish Highlands coast to coast, west to east from Kintail through Glen Affric and Strathglass to Beauly. The Highland Cross 2018 will take place on Saturday 22nd June. The route once again starts at Morvich and follows the Affric Kintail Way until the end of Loch Affric where participants cross to the north of the river to Affric Quarry where the bike stage begins. Just under 800 competitors will be taking part and raising funds for Highland Social and Medical charities.

To date the Highland Cross will have contributed over £4m to Highland charities - a wonderful testament to the power of the Highland Community. For more information visit www.highlandcross.co.uk.

Glenurquhart Highland Gathering & Games

For over 60 years the people of Glen Urquhart have striven to create Highland magic for spectator and competitors alike at their annual gathering and this year promises to be no exception.

The 2019 event will be held at Blairbeg Park, Drumnadrochit on Saturday 24th August and will include Pipe Bands, Piping Competitions and Highland Dancing. Lochalsh Dirty 30 Challenge

A choice of walking events (you can run if you like!) to test your fitness: The Dirty 30 Challenge (30 miiles) or The Dirty Dozen (12 miles) both starting and finishing at Glenelg west of Shiel Bridge. Shinty

With the shinty season now extending through the summer months, visitors might like to sample the Highlands' most popular sport. Matches take place locally on most Saturdays with clubs fielding teams at all levels, senior and junior. In recent years womens shinty has progressed and has become highly competitive.

There are three teams close to the Affric Kintail Way - Glenurqhart Shinty Club based in Drumnadrochit, Strathglass Shinty Club playing their home matches in Cannich and Kinlochsheil over in the west at Balmacara. To check out fixture lists visit the Camanachd website.
